For Pipy Spinning Wheel SLITTED Corded Footman Waxed Cotton Rope String Leather

This corded footman is idea as a direct replacement for a missing or damaged original corded footman, and can even be used as a replacement for a wooden footman. A corded footman was once fitted as standard to the Saxony-style Pipy spinning wheel made by Pipy Craft Ltd from 1962, and they have certainly been fitted to a number of other wheels. They are more effective and functional than one might think, and are certainly not a poor substitute for a wooden (or coat hanger!) footman. Notably, they are very light and quiet in use. Even one of Queen Victoria's spinning wheels had a corded footman!

Handmade here in south Wales, UK, this spinning wheel corded footman consists of an approximately 90cm length of dark brown, 4mm diameter waxed cotton cord, attached to a real leather strap approximately 73mm x 25mm x 4mm thick that fits over the crank of the spinning wheel's shaft. You will need to thread the other end of the cord through a hole in the wooden treadle of your spinning wheel and then knot or lash it. The hole in the treadle needs to be at least 4mm diameter for the cord to be able to feed through. If you don't wish to make or enlarge a hole in the treadle, I have included a brass-plated screw eye for you to screw into the treadle for the cord to attach to.

NB. Unlike the other corded footman that I sell - the 'non-slitted' type - with this 'slitted' footman, you do not need to dismantle any nuts and bolts, etc. on the shaft to be able to slip the leather strap on. Instead, just open up the slit in the leather strap and slip it over the nut/bolt on the shaft.

To order, please select the hole size from the drop-down list. This is the hole in the leather strap that fits over the crank of the spinning wheel's shaft. Please make sure that you choose a hole size that is slightly larger than the diameter of the shaft. For example, if the shaft's diameter is 6mm, then it's recommended that you choose a 7mm hole.

One 19mm long brass-plated screw eye with 6mm internal eye hole.
