For Haldane Left Hand Thread Spinning Wheel Whorl Retaining Nut

Very difficult to obtain, these Imperial-sized (non-metric) steel nuts are a direct replacement for a missing or damaged Haldane spinning wheel whorl retaining nut. They may also be suitable for other makes and models of spinning wheel. They have a left-hand thread, as Haldane originals do, to match the left-hand thread of the Haldane’s flyer mandrel (‘spindle’). This means that, with the nut fitted in place in the wooden whorl, the whorl tightens up on the flyer’s mandrel by rotating the whorl anti-clockwise (counter-clockwise or ‘to the left’), and unscrews from the mandrel by rotating the whorl clockwise (‘to the right’). This procedure is quite common with vintage whorls.

The nuts fit perfectly into the hexagonal hole in the wooden whorl. To fit the nut, fit the slightly bevelled (tapered) face of the nut squarely into the hole first, and then press it firmly home. If the nut is a tight fit, then place the underside of the whorl on a hard, flat surface, protecting the underside with cardboard or wood if necessary, and then give the nut a few gentle taps with a small hammer, taking great care whilst avoiding using force. If it is still too tight a fit, then a tiny amount of Vaseline, grease or even washing up liquid can be used to help with assembly. When inserted fully, the outside face of the nut should be pretty much flush with the wooden face of the whorl.
