For Ashford Traditional Pre 1975 Traveller Mk1 Mk2 1977 To 1996 9mm Tension Knob

Direct compatible replacement Single-Drive, Scotch Tension tension knob for the following Ashford spinning wheels:

This lightly-oiled, hardwood tension knob controls the fibre 'take-up' of the Scotch Tension brake band, and fits the 9mm hole in the spinning wheel of the models listed above. It has a tiny hole drilled in the 'stem' for fitting the brake band (see my other listing for my 'Scotch Tension Single Drive Spinning Wheel Brake Band Kit For Ashford And Others', if you need one of these too). The stem is tapered slightly throughout it's length, to provide a good grip in the 9mm hole. Also suitable for a number of other spinning wheels that have a 9mm hole for the tension knob. NB. See my other listings for my other tension knobs compatible with other Ashford spinning wheels, including the thicker-stemmed one to fit the 12mm hole of later Ashfords, and also for the screw-in, threaded type for several Ashford models.

Also supplied is a 12m reel of PTFE tape. Over time, the hole in the spinning wheel may become worn, resulting in the tension knob working loose in the hole. To remedy this, wrap some PTFE tape around the stem of the tension knob to produce a tighter fit. In fact, due to it’s self-lubricating and ‘non-stick’ properties, I often use PTFE (‘Teflon’) tape myself with spinning wheel tension knobs to achieve a lovely, ‘silky-smooth’ turning action.

NB. Some of the tension knobs made by Ashford had a ball approximately 30mm in diameter, whilst some of them had a 35mm diameter ball. I could have produced these using a larger 35mm hardwood ball, but felt that these look disproportionately too large when fitted, compared to other components on the spinning wheel, and so I settled on using the more aesthetically-pleasing smaller 30mm diameter balls instead.

Please note that, with all hand-crafted items, the dimensions and appearance can differ very slightly with each tension knob. However, we use a 'template' and try our best to produce each one pretty much the same.

Approximate overall length: 84mm (3.5 inches).

Ball diameter: approximately 30mm (1.2 inches).

Approximate width half way along the 'stem': 9mm.

One reel of 12m x 12mm PTFE 'plumber's tape' to encourage, if necessary, a slightly tighter grip of the tension knob in its hole.
