5 Metres 2mm Waxed Cotton Spinning Wheel Drive Band For Double Or Single Drive

My 5 metre lengths of 2mm diameter/thick dark brown or light brown, waxed-cotton drive band are ideal for a wide range of single- or double-drive spinning wheel. Most single-drive wheels use less than 2m of drive band, whilst most double-drive wheels use around twice this amount, so there’s plenty spare here, with enough to fit two single-drive wheels, in fact. Also supplied is 1m of strong, brown cotton thread for ‘lashing’ the two ends together.

Fitting the drive band to a SINGLE-DRIVE wheel: Initially, back off the drive band tensioner (knob?) to its 'least tension' setting (equating to the shortest length of drive band), but then reverse the direction a little as if you were taking up the tension slightly in a drive band. Next, wrap the drive band around the main drive wheel and also either the LARGEST pulley on the flyer’s whorl, if you are using Single-Drive, Scotch Tension, or around the main drive wheel and the LARGEST pulley on the bobbin, if using Single-Drive, Irish Tension. Again: If you are using Scotch Tension and the whorl has more than one pulley then, wrap the band around the largest one. If, on the other hand, the whorl has just the one pulley, then of course, use that. Similarly, if you are instead using Irish Tension and the bobbin has a pulley at both ends, make sure that the largest of the two pulleys is in alignment with the main drive wheel and receives the drive band. Finally, follow the instructions outlined below for lashing the two ends of the drive band together.

Lashing the two ends of the drive band together: Taking up the slack in the drive band but not pulling too tightly (aim for a nice, comfortable fit), cut the drive band to length, but add approximately 8mm extra to the length to allow for overlap and ‘lashing’. Next, overlap the two ends by the 8mm extra you’ve allowed, and then use enough of the 1m length of supplied cotton thread to ‘lash’ the two ends of the overlapped drive band together, by wrapping the cotton thread ‘round and ‘round the 8mm extra, before tying the two ends of the thread together. You may wish to add a few small drops of super glue or similar (not supplied) to ‘seal’ the cotton thread, but don’t overdo it and end up with a very stiff 8mm length on non-flexible drive band that might ‘clunk’ as you spin! Remember: No slack in the drive band when overlapping and lashing – use a comfortable, tightish tension.

Fitting the drive band to a DOUBLE-DRIVE wheel: Double-drive bands are wrapped around the main drive wheel twice, and around both the whorl and the bobbin pulley once. This forms a ‘figure-of-eight’ shape in the drive band, giving the illusion that there are two drive bands whereas in fact there is just the one, ‘simply’ fitted in a figure-of-either fashion. Start the process by initially backing off the drive band tensioner (knob?) to its 'least tension' setting (equating to the shortest length of drive band), but then reverse the direction a little as if you were taking up the tension slightly in a drive band. Next, and WORKING IN A CLOCKWISE DIRECTION THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROCESS, feed the drive band underneath the main drive wheel and then around the largest pulley on the bobbin (if the bobbin has a pulley at both ends, make sure that the largest of the two pulleys is in alignment with the main drive wheel and receives the drive band). Next, continue taking the drive band back towards and then around the main drive wheel and then, still working in a clockwise direction, towards and then around the largest pulley on the flyer’s whorl (or around the only pulley, if the whorl has just the one, of course). Next, take the drive band towards and then back around the main drive wheel once more, finishing where you started off. Finally, follow the instructions outlined above for lashing the two ends of the drive band together.
